BMW ActiveHybrid 3 - Navigational Technology Leader

As we expected, the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 drew a lot of attention during its debut in Detroit.  BMW not only combined the high performance of the 3-Series with the fuel efficiency of a hybrid, but they also spend a lot of development time on the navigation system.  There is a lot to discuss about how BMW is leading the navigational technology segment, so please read on.

More than merely advising drivers to turn right onto Park St. or provide warnings about traffic jams on your route, the new navigation system featured in the imminent ActiveHybrid 3 will be the first in its segment to instruct drivers on the best time to use and recharge the vehicle's battery. The ultimate goal is to allow owners to get the most out of their hybrid's precious electrons.

You're probably wondering how exactly that will work.  The advanced technology measures altitude, miles from destination, and other key data points of a particular route. Say you're driving the soon-to-be-released BMW 3 Series on a route with a steep hill... It will intuit the downhill part of the drive. Given there's a full charge of charging opportunity en route, the hybrid will then use more power going uphill, avoiding any underwhelming bog-down.
